I first met Dr. Calvin Mein on February 20th of 2006. My first visit to his office was an unreferred visit but his staff found time for me to see the doctor. I had torn retinas in both eyes and Dr. Mein was able to fix my right eye with a laser procedure in the office. Unfortunately, the left eye was a different story. The left retina was torn so badly that surgery was the only option.

I am not a big fan of doctors. That first visit to Dr. Mein was trying for both of us because of my skepticism. However, Dr. Mein was very patient with me. We did the first surgery and unfortunately because of the severity of the problem, it didn't take. When Dr. Mein told me the bad news I truly believe that he felt worse than I did, and I was devastated. We would have to do the surgery again, this time a more rigorous procedure and naturally, I was scared and confused. This is when I first discovered how wonderful Dr. Mein truly is. I called his cell phone the night before surgery to discuss options and he spent a full hour on the phone working with me and reassuring me.

Later that summer I had to have a surgery to repair damage that scar tissue had left behind. This is a natural process that happens to some people and I was made well aware that it could happen long before it actually did. I had my last surgery November 30th to remove the silicon oil from my eye and give me my sight back.

I saw Dr. Mein on January 3rd and we both believe that my left eye is healed.

The bottom line is this. I have never met a more professional, caring man in my life. Dr. Calvin Mein is, bar none, the best doctor that I have ever dealt with, of any kind. His skill as a surgeon is unparalleled and his compassion and caring for his patients is unrivaled. I am extremely lucky that God blessed me with Dr. Mein. I hope you never had the eye problems that I have had, but if you do; please see Dr. Calvin Mein. He is the best, period.

I have been to the dark side and back.

After multiple laser treatments and various injection that did not hold down the bleeding in my eyes, I was at a loss. I was barely working and not driving any more. Although my spirits were always high that someday I would see again, there was not much else I could do. I was 57.

Dr. Calvin Mein brought me back. He called me one night and asked me if I would like to try something that was a little un-conventional at the time. (today it's common practice) I had nothing to loose. I had cataracts that were covering all my vision and they could not operate as long as the bleeding inside was still active. My left eye was 20/200 and my right eye was 20/400.

I went in the next day and received the injections of this new medication in my eyes. The telephone poles were actually not bent at the top anymore as we drove home. Dr. Mein checked my eyes 2 weeks later and there was no sign of bleeding.

We scheduled the cataract surgery the following week. From that point on I have been receiving the injections in my eyes. I am driving again and working full time. My left eye is 20/25 and my right eye is 20/60. This is all thanks to Dr. Mein taking hold of a devastating disease and bringing me back into the light. He probably cares more about our vision than we do. We see out of them but he sees the whole picture, the person behind those eyes.

I am an ongoing work in progress and thanks to Dr. Mein, we have progress. He cares about the patient and will sit and explain everything to them.
